Adding Content to SharePoint is Easier than Ever

E-mail Print PDF

Update: It turns out that copying and pasting images into the wiki only worked because the images existed on another accessible site. They pasted in as links to the images. SharePoint's Wiki still won't upload images automatically. They have still improved the process however as you can upload and add an image to your wiki in one step instead of as two separate steps now. You can also upload content as a blog post using MS Word which will put the images up. You can then copy the blog post to the wiki site. The original article is below.

I recently set up a SharePoint Foundation 2010 site and found that it's even easier than before to add content. While adding data to a wiki in the SharePoint site I found that you can now paste content with images, tables, etc straight into the edit box. You no longer need to post images and then link them in the document. Most of the content I added, I added by copying straight out of a Word document into the wiki. SharePoint handled the images automatically. The best part is that this was built in functionality. I installed Windows Server 2008 R2, installed SharePoint Foundation 2010, and was done.

This was so straightforward it tempts me to try creating a new site using the blogging features of SharePoint. I need to verify, but it looks like it is possible to host an externally facing site with just Windows Web Server 2008 R2 and SharePoint Foundation 2010. The latest version of Windows Web Server allows SQL Server to be installed which means you no longer need separate database system with appropriate licenses. If this is accurate the licensing cost for the site would only be about $400 to $500. Granted in this scenario I would be hosting the site on my own hardware so I also have bandwidth and hardware costs to consider. It would make formatting my posts so much easier though, and most of the features I want, such as forums would be built in.

This isn't to say that I don't like Joomla. Joomla has worked pretty well for this site. I like to explore different options rather than just trying the same solution over and over. This way I can recommend the right software for a solution. If I put up a site based on SharePoint, I'll post an update with a link to the site.
