Quick Review of the 3D in the HP Envy 17 3D

E-mail Print PDF

Sadly, I have to report that the 3D is unusable for me. The ghosting (cross talk) is so bad it makes my brain feel wobbly after a few minutes. The extra image in each eye seems to make it hard for me to choose what I'm focusing on. This appears to be an artifact of having such a bright screen. I think if I could turn down the brightness during 3D playback it would help, but when I launch a 3D video the screen switches to full brightness. I'm going to keep playing with it and will report back if I find a good fix.

The good news is I didn't actually buy this laptop for the 3D. I chose the 3D version because it offered the latest Intel architecture and the other versions of the laptop didn't yet. The HP Envy 17 3D is still a good deal for the price even if you don't use the 3D at all. I can have a few hours of battery life for working on the train, or I can have a lot of power for playing games. This flexibility combined with a slim, attractive design make the HP Envy a solid choice.
