My HP Envy 3D Won’t Work with My Mitsubishi 3D DLP TV - Solved

E-mail Print PDF

I decided to plug my HP Envy 3D laptop into my 3D Ready Mitsubishi DLP Television. It seemed like a no brainer. Plug in the 3D capable computer to the 3D capable TV and get 3D. Unfortunately it didn't work. Power DVD kept telling me I need an HDMI 1.4 capable video port. Turned out my problem was the cheap HDMI cable I bought a couple years earlier. Putting out a 3D data stream takes more bandwidth than a 2D stream. You need a higher end cable to handle all this data without getting interference. It's similar to how Ethernet cables work. Even though the cable look the same (and may have the same pins) a cable rated for 100Mbps can't be used for 1Gbps. All the individual wires in the cable interfere with each other. If the cable isn't designed to handle this interference at higher speeds you get corrupt data on the other end.

I ended up getting one of these Monster HDMI 800HD Ultra-High Speed Cables with Ethernet. I could go with a cheaper brand, but the Monster cable is clearly marked with its capabilities and I know it's going to work. This cable is more than I needed, since my TV is only HDMI 1.3 and therefore can't actually take a full 1080p 3d signal, I could have gotten away with a lower end cable. I'm thinking of replacing another TV in the near future though and I want a cable that can handle 240hz in case I go that route and want to test some things. The Monster 700HD cable would have been sufficient; anything lower would have been iffy. I didn't want to keep trying new cables until it worked.

After replacing the cable I was able to play my 3D movies from my HP Envy laptop to my Mitsubishi DLP. I did have to make sure that Power DVD was set to use using the checkerboard 3D type. I had assumed it would be the standard 120hz, but that isn't the cased for the Mitsubishi DLPs (at least not mine). I still haven't gotten game to run on the TV unfortunately, but that seems to be a different issue unrelated to the 3D. I'll post more about that once I find a solution.
