Battlefield 3 has Released is Murder on Video Cards

E-mail Print PDF

I'd like to write about Battlefield 3 now that I've played, but mostly I can just tell you the game is very pretty. I know this because I have plenty of time to examine each frame in detail as they each take their time on my screen. It turns out that the 6850M on my laptop isn't up to the task of running BF3 at the lowest settings in 1920 x 1080. Unfortunately, it also doesn't want to scale when I run at a lower resolution. It seemed like I could play at cell phone resolution, but that's a kind of disappointing option since I'm effectively playing on a cell phone sized screen. My desktop video card is a bit aged now as well. Looks like it's time to upgrade. You can see some different graphics cards benchmarked against Battlefield 3 here.

I don't really want to put $700 into a video card right now, so I'm looking at the options that are good enough. The Radeon 6970 looks like it's going to be the best bang for the buck at around $330 to $400. The GTX 580 is a little better, but also a little more at around $490. I'll probably go with the Radeon this time. I'll let you know what I think once I've tried it out.
